CompTIA DataX Is Now DataAI: What Changed (and What Didn't)

If you've been studying for DataX and suddenly can't find it in the Pearson VUE menu, here's the short answer: CompTIA renamed DataX to DataAI. Nothing about the exam itself changed. This article explains exactly what the rename did and didn't affect, so you can stop worrying and get back to studying.

The short version

CompTIA announced the change in January 2026, and within weeks Pearson VUE listings, digital badges, and printed certificates all carried the new label. It was an unusually fast rebrand — CompTIA normally renames a certification alongside a new exam version, as when ITF+ became Tech+. Here, the name changed and everything else stayed put.

What did NOT change

Almost everything. Specifically:

• The exam code. It's still DY0-001. Pearson VUE now lists it as "CompTIA DataAI (DY0-001)."
• The objectives. No new objectives were added, and none were removed. The blueprint is word-for-word the same.
• The question pool. Identical.
• The five domains. Mathematics and Statistics; Modeling, Analysis, and Outcomes; Machine Learning; Operations and Processes; and Specialized Applications of Data Science — unchanged, along with their weights.
• The format and scoring. Up to 90 questions, 165 minutes, multiple-choice and performance-based, pass/fail with no scaled score.
• Validity and renewal. Still three years, still 60 CEUs through CompTIA's continuing education program.
• Exam pricing tier and regional availability, language packs, accommodations, reschedule windows, and proctoring rules.

What DID change

• The name, obviously — on the certification, the exam listing, and your certificate.
• Logos and badges. New graphics went live quickly; new badges are available in Credly, and a new PDF certificate can be downloaded from your CompTIA account.
• The positioning. The rename makes the AI emphasis explicit rather than implied.

Why CompTIA did it

The exam already covered machine learning, MLOps, and advanced analytics — but the name "DataX" didn't say so. CompTIA's reasoning was clarity: data science and AI are no longer separate tracks inside modern organizations, and a name with "AI" in it makes the scope obvious to hiring managers scanning a résumé before anyone reads the objectives. It also aligns the credential visibly with CompTIA's other expert-tier certifications, alongside SecurityX and CloudNetX.

Keeping the code and objectives stable was a deliberate choice: rewriting the exam would have forced dual inventories, disrupted training programs, and potentially raised prices for candidates mid-cycle.

If you already hold DataX

Nothing to do. You're now recognized as DataAI certified with no extra steps and no fee. Download the new badge from Credly and the updated certificate from your CompTIA account if you want them.

Your renewal date doesn't move either. A DataX holder who planned to renew in June 2027 renews at that time, under the DataAI title. CEUs you've already earned still count, and because the objectives match, training taken for DataX continues to qualify for DataAI CEUs. See the general renewal guide for how the CE program works.

If you're mid-study

Nothing was lost. Study materials labelled DataX remain valid — CompTIA's own FAQ says so plainly, since no new objectives were added. Your books, courseware, note cards, lab images, and practice question banks all match the live exam. The only adjustment: look for "DataAI" in the test center menu.

If you already bought a voucher

Your DataX voucher works. Vouchers, keys, and licenses purchased under the old name map to DY0-001, which remains active — the transition is automatic at the testing centers. There's no exchange, no reissue, and no action needed.

What about job postings and your résumé?

Postings referencing CompTIA DataX, CompTIA DataAI, or DY0-001 all mean the same certification. If your résumé says DataX, it's not wrong — though listing it as "CompTIA DataAI (formerly DataX)" for a while removes any ambiguity for recruiters who know one name but not the other.
