Most people don't fail Network+ because the material is impossible. They fail because they read passively, neglect subnetting, skip hands-on practice, and cram at the end. This plan fixes that by spreading the work across eight weeks, weighting each domain by exam importance, and building in daily subnetting drills, lab time, and full-length practice from the start.

Eight weeks is a common target for a first-time pass; give yourself ten to twelve if you're newer, or compress it if you already work with networks. The sequence matters more than the exact calendar.

Two habits to start on day one

Before the weekly breakdown, two things run through the entire plan:

  • Daily subnetting drills. Ten minutes a day, every day. Subnetting appears throughout the exam and speed is scored indirectly through time pressure. By week eight it should be automatic.
  • Short, hands-on lab sessions. Twenty to thirty minutes at a time — enough to configure, test, and document one task. Applied practice is what makes concepts stick and prepares you for PBQs.

Week 1 — Networking Concepts, part 1

Start with the foundation: the OSI model, networking appliances and their functions, and common ports, protocols, services, and traffic types. Begin your daily subnetting drills now, even if they're slow at first.

Week 2 — Networking Concepts, part 2 (IP addressing and subnetting)

Go deep on IP addressing, IPv4 and IPv6, and subnetting. This is the single most leverage-heavy week in the plan. Practice calculating subnet masks, network and broadcast addresses, and usable host ranges until you can do it quickly and accurately. Everything later gets easier once subnetting clicks.

Week 3 — Network Implementation

Configuring routing and switching, selecting and configuring wireless devices and standards, and physical installation factors (including MDF/IDF). This is hands-on territory, so lean on labs. Configure, break, and fix things in a safe environment.

Week 4 — Network Operations

Organizational processes, monitoring technologies, IPv4/IPv6 network services, access and management methods, and disaster recovery. Give attention to the modern operations content: log aggregation and flow data, baseline metrics, API-driven automation, and change management. Practice interpreting operational data in scenarios.

Week 5 — Network Security

Basic security concepts, common attacks and their impact, and applying defensive techniques — plus zero trust and SASE/SSE concepts. It's a smaller domain (14%), so keep it efficient: solid fundamentals rather than deep dives.

Weeks 6–7 — Network Troubleshooting

The biggest domain gets two weeks. Learn CompTIA's troubleshooting methodology in order — it's testable — then apply it to cabling and physical issues, connectivity, performance, and configuration faults. Do this in the lab and through scenario drills. Because troubleshooting draws on every other domain, these two weeks also reinforce everything you've studied.

Week 8 — Full-length practice and pacing

Stop learning new material and prove readiness. Take full-length, timed practice exams under the 90-minute clock, including PBQs. Review every miss and every lucky guess. Keep drilling subnetting. Rehearse the pacing so exam day feels routine. When you're consistently clearing your target with time to spare, you're ready to book.

FAQ

Is eight weeks enough to pass Network+? For many candidates with some background, yes — if the study is consistent and includes daily subnetting and hands-on labs. Newer candidates may want ten to twelve weeks.

How many hours per week does this assume? Roughly 8–12 focused hours, plus the daily ten-minute subnetting habit. Fewer hours means stretching the calendar.

Why daily subnetting drills? Because subnetting appears throughout the exam and time is tight. Automatic subnetting frees mental bandwidth for scenario questions.

Can I skip the lab sessions? Not advisable. The PBQs and troubleshooting domain reward hands-on skill that reading can't build.

When should I start practice tests? Do a short diagnostic early to find weak areas, then focus full-length timed practice in the final week or two.
