EC-Council ECE Policy Explained: How to Keep Any EC-Council Certification Active

EC-Council ECE Policy Explained: How to Keep Any EC-Council Certification Active

Every EC-Council certification expires after three years — and the ECE program is how you keep it. This is the complete, vendor-wide guide to the rules, the tiered fees, what counts for credit, and the mistakes that get people suspended.

You worked hard for your CEH, CHFI, CPENT, or CCISO. Here's the part too many people overlook: it doesn't last forever. Every EC-Council certification is valid for three years, and keeping it active means satisfying the ECE (EC-Council Continuing Education) program within that window. Miss it and your hard-won credential is suspended. The good news is that ECE is simple once you understand its two requirements — and most of it is genuine professional development you'd do anyway. This is the master guide to the policy across all EC-Council certs. (For step-by-step, cert-specific walkthroughs, see how to renew your CEH and how to renew your CHFI.)

The two requirements

To keep any EC-Council certification active over its 3-year cycle, you must:

  1. Earn 120 ECE credits.
  2. Pay your annual EC-Council membership (CE) fee.

That's the whole framework. No mandatory re-exam. But miss either one and your status stalls — and the two failure modes are different, which trips people up (see below).

The annual fee — tiered, and one fee covers all

This is the most misunderstood part of the policy, so here it is clearly. Your annual CE fee is tiered by the highest certification you hold, and you pay a single fee that covers every EC-Council certification you hold — not a fee per cert:

Your highest-tier certification Annual CE fee
CEH, CHFI, CND, CSA, CTIA, ECIH and other standard certs $80 / year
CCISO $100 / year
CPENT / LPT (Master) $250 / year

So if you hold a stack of standard certs, you pay one $80/year fee for all of them. If you hold CCISO, you pay $100/year — which covers your standard certs too. And if you hold CPENT or LPT, your $250/year covers everything you hold. You never stack these fees. (This is why a multi-cert professional with CPENT pays $250 total, not $250 + $80.)

How many credits, and how to pace them

You need 120 ECE credits across three years. EC-Council recommends earning 40 credits per year and submitting them progressively — not scrambling for 120 in your final year. As a rule of thumb, one hour of a qualifying activity equals one ECE credit, so 40/year is roughly 40 hours of professional development annually, spread across activities you likely do anyway.

The "bank credits early" advice is the single best way to avoid renewal trouble. People who wait until year three are the ones who fail.

What activities earn ECE credits

EC-Council recognizes a wide range of activities (around two dozen, grouped into roughly a dozen paths). Common ones:

  • Attending conferences, seminars, and webinars (typically 1 credit/hour)
  • Completing relevant online courses or training
  • Reading approved books and materials
  • Writing articles, white papers, or research
  • Teaching / instructing or preparing to deliver a relevant class
  • Passing a newer version of your certification exam
  • Other professional development EC-Council lists, with new activities submittable for approval

Because so many activities qualify — including free webinars and reading — most working professionals accumulate credits naturally through a normal year.

Where it all happens: Aspen

Every part of ECE is managed in the EC-Council Aspen portal — logging activities, uploading proof, tracking your running total toward 120, paying your fee, and completing renewal. We walk through the portal in the EC-Council Aspen portal explained. Keep documentation (attendance certificates, links, proof of authorship) for everything you submit — undocumented credits are a common rejection.

Auto-renewal

Since October 2024, EC-Council offers auto-renewal, which streamlines staying active — but it doesn't remove your responsibility to earn the 120 credits. Treat auto-renewal as a convenience for the fee, not a substitute for continuing education.

The two ways people fail (and they're different)

This nuance matters:

  • Missing the 120 credits within three years → your certification is suspended. There's typically a window to earn the shortfall and have it reinstated, but it's stressful and not guaranteed.
  • Missing the fee payment → you can be marked inactive immediately, even if your credits are complete. The fee is treated strictly, with no grace period.

So you need both the credits and a current fee. As an alternative to the ECE route entirely, passing the current version of your exam also satisfies renewal — useful if you'd rather re-sit than chase credits, or want the latest content on record.

Per-cert specifics

The 120-credit rule and the tiered fee apply across the board, but each cert has its own renewal walkthrough:

FAQ

How long is an EC-Council certification valid? Three years. Keep it active via ECE (120 credits + annual fee) within that window, or re-take the current exam.

Do I pay a separate fee for each certification? No — one annual fee at your highest tier ($80 / $100 / $250) covers all your EC-Council certifications.

How many credits, and how fast? 120 over three years — aim for 40/year, submitted progressively.

Do I have to re-take my exam to renew? No. ECE credits are the standard path; re-taking the current exam is an optional alternative.

What happens if I miss the deadline? Missing credits suspends the cert (with a possible reinstatement window); missing the fee marks you inactive immediately (no grace period). Keep both current.

Where do I submit everything? In the EC-Council Aspen portal, with documentation for each activity.
