Linux+ XK0-005 to XK0-006: What Changed and Why

If you researched Linux+ a while ago, you may have studied — or bought materials for — XK0-005. That exam is gone. CompTIA replaced it with XK0-006 (V8), and this isn't a cosmetic update. The domain structure changed, the weights shifted, and CompTIA added a substantial amount of modern content. This article explains exactly what changed and how to study the right version.

The retirement, briefly

XK0-006 launched on July 15, 2025, and XK0-005 retired on January 13, 2026. After that date, XK0-006 is the only version you can sit. The two exams are not interchangeable, and — importantly — study materials built for XK0-005 no longer match the current blueprint. If you're working from a 2024 course or an older study guide, you're preparing for the wrong exam.

What stayed the same

The fundamentals of Linux administration carry over. Both versions:

  • Are vendor-neutral, intermediate, hands-on certifications for Linux administrators.
  • Run up to 90 questions in 90 minutes with a 720 passing score on a 100–900 scale.
  • Include performance-based questions and reward real command-line skill.
  • Recommend about 12 months of hands-on Linux experience.
  • Cover core skills: the boot process, filesystems, storage, permissions, services, networking, and troubleshooting.

So your foundational Linux knowledge isn't wasted. The changes are about structure and modern tooling.

What changed: structure

XK0-005 had four domains. XK0-006 has five. CompTIA split Services and User Management into its own domain to give it the weight it deserves, and reduced the System Management percentage to make room. The current weighting is System Management 23%, Services and User Management 20%, Security 18%, Automation/Orchestration/Scripting 17%, and Troubleshooting 22%. What changed: content

This is where XK0-006 really differs. The new and expanded topics reflect what Linux administration actually looks like now — hybrid cloud, containers, and automation:

  • Python scripting. Entirely new. XK0-005 kept Python out of the objectives; XK0-006 expects basic Python literacy alongside shell scripting.
  • Automation tools named directly. Ansible and Puppet appear by name. You're expected to understand push versus pull configuration management, idempotency, and the basic structure of an Ansible playbook. OpenTofu and infrastructure-as-code concepts are in scope.
  • Containers by name. Docker and Podman appear in the objectives, with scenarios on container lifecycle, images, volumes, and networking. Orchestration with Kubernetes and Docker Swarm is included.
  • Git and CI/CD. Version control with Git, plus CI/CD concepts like pipelines, GitOps, shift-left testing, and DevSecOps.
  • AI best practices. New to the exam — including code generation and prompt engineering in a Linux administration context.
  • Virtualization and cloud. KVM/QEMU virtualization is more prominent, and cloud/hybrid context now runs through several domains, including troubleshooting.

The performance-based questions are also weighted more heavily than on XK0-005, reinforcing that hands-on skill is the real target.

How to study if you're coming from XK0-005

Three moves make the transition efficient:

  1. Keep your fundamentals. Your knowledge of the boot process, filesystems, permissions, services, and troubleshooting largely holds. Confirm it and move on.
  2. Front-load the new content. Give real attention to Python, Ansible/Puppet and idempotency, containers (Docker/Podman), Git, CI/CD concepts, and AI best practices. These are where experienced candidates most often have gaps.
  3. Get hands-on with modern tooling. If your day-to-day is traditional server admin, spend lab time on containers and automation specifically. Our PBQ and hands-on guide shows how.

Make sure your materials are current

The single biggest mistake in this transition is studying from XK0-005 materials. They'll cover the shared fundamentals but miss the new content entirely — and unauthorized "brain dumps" also violate CompTIA's candidate agreement, which can cost you your certification. Use current, official XK0-006 resources.

Can I still take XK0-005? No. XK0-005 retired on January 13, 2026. XK0-006 is the only current version.

Is my existing Linux+ certification still valid? Yes. An earned Linux+ certification remains valid for its three-year term regardless of the exam version you passed. The version change affects new candidates.

Is XK0-006 harder than XK0-005? It's broader in modern tooling — Python, automation, containers, AI — and weights PBQs more heavily. Fundamentals are similar, but the new content raises the bar for experienced candidates.

What's the most important new topic? Automation and scripting content — Python, Ansible/Puppet, and containers — plus the addition of AI best practices. That's where the biggest gaps tend to be.

Can I study from my old XK0-005 materials? Only for the shared fundamentals, and cautiously. They miss the new content, so use current XK0-006 resources for the exam you'll actually sit.
